Texas is probably not the among the places that comes to mind when you are thinking about where great American wines come from, but it should be. Today, Texas is producing some top quality wines and is the fifth largest producer in the country.
To get a feel for just how good Texas wine production really is, treat yourself to a bottle or two from one of the top 5 wineries in the great state of Texas.
Ste. Genevieve
Everything is bigger in Texas and Ste. Genevieve is the biggest winery Texas has to offer. The vineyard raises more than twelve varietals on more than 800 acres of prime growing land outside Fort Stockton. Their production facilities are also massive and produce more than 630,000 gallons of wine each year.
Llano Estacado
Llano Estacado produces about 220,000 case of wine each year. They have proven themselves to be quite talented. In 1986 they captured a Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco Fair’s Internal Wine Competition on the back of their 1984 Chardonnay. They have continued to capture awards at wine competitions around the globe and have had their wines served at the White House during the Reagan Administration.
Becker Vineyards
Becker Vineyards produces 50,000 case each year. This may seem a paltry sum compared to the previous entries, but the wine Dr. Richard Becker produces are first rate. Robert Mondavi bought a Magnum of Becker Cabernet Sauvignon at auction after challenging Becker to prove his excellent wine was actually made with Texas grapes. George W. Bush served Becker wines during his time in the White House on several occasions.
Messina Hof Winery & Resort
Messina Hof is probably best known for their Papa Paulo Port, a wine that has garnered numerous national and international awards. Messina Hof produces about 265,000 gallons of wine each year. They have controlling interest in roughly 25 percent of the grapevines in Texas although, they only have 42 acres dedicated to their winery at their primary location outside of Bryan Texas.
Grape Creek Vineyards
Founded in 1985, Grape Creek is a relatively recent player in Texas wine making. They are showing themselves to be one of the top players when it comes to crafting award winning wines. In just the last 2 years, they have captured more than 100 awards. Among them, two Grand Star Awards at the Lone Star Wine Competition.
