Wine Country in Missouri
The beautiful vineyards of Missouri have a unique and storied history. German, French, Austrian, and Italian settlers brought old-world winemaking with them as they immigrated to the state. Unfortunately, Prohibition nearly ended Missouri’s tremendous wine industry.
Up to that point, Missouri’s wine production was second only to that of California. The wine industry, however, enjoyed a rebirth in the 1960s with the restoration of many original wineries. Currently, Missouri is home to a vibrant wine community. The vineyards and the charming towns surrounding them are beautiful destinations for those planning winery vacations.
Missouri has four official American Viticultural Areas: the Augusta Region, the Hermann region, the Ozark Highlands Region, and the Ozark Mountain Region. All feature distinct geography and wines.
The Augusta Region is located at the eastern edge of the state. The area has many wineries situated amongst the rolling hillsides of the area. The Augusta Winery is one local favorite. It specializes in small quantities and has several award winning wines.
The Hermann Region, centrally located in the state, is defined by its rugged terrain. German immigrants planted vines on the stony hillsides. Their stoic determination turned this area from wilderness into the site of many successful vineyards. The Stone Hill Winery is one such historic facility.
The Ozark Highland and Mountain Region encompass the southwest and south-central portions of the state. This area is knows for is picturesque vistas and country friendliness. There are dozens of unique and enjoyable wineries spread across this area’s scenic countryside.
Missouri’s unofficial nickname is the ‘Show-Me’ state. The slogan speaks to the residents’ resolute and tenacious character. This practical nature has certainly influenced the state’s wine industry. The vineyards and wineries are absent of shallow trends or frivolous showmanship. The result: beautiful wines produced in an enjoyable, charming, and down-to-earth place.
